By tradition, when someone enters your office, you stand and greet the newcomer. It is a respectful and welcoming gesture signalling acknowledgement of the person.

Standing up is what you should do when someone comes into your space, whether it is your office, home, even in the most casual setting like a bar or any space that is yours.

But when it’s uncomfortable to stand and greet, apologize. Say something like, “Please excuse me for not standing,” and explain why you couldn’t get up. This helps the person feels welcomed, respected and comfortable.

Thank you.
