Parenting Etiquette

I had a blast yesterday on the TVC's Wake Up Nigeria Show talking with Emem Ime on the manners lessons parents should instil in their children. Next Tuesday at the same time, join me again. A few minutes after 7:00 AM, I go live.

Don't just tell your child "don't do this" or "don't do that" when you want to stop them from behaving negatively toward you or in general. Teach them. Have a good alternative ready to replace bad behaviour.

Then, list the constructive behaviour you want to utilize in place of the unfavourable one. To explain the new behaviour to the children, PUT IT IN PICTURE. Instead of saying, "Don't interrupt me when I'm talking." As an example,  "Boys, if you see me talking and you have anything to say to me, wait until I'm finished talking before you talk to me." You should instruct your children and don’t just TELL. Place the new behaviour and the repercussions of breaking it where the children will see them frequently. E.,g, on the refrigerator.

Speak in effective ways and take practical action that impacts your children's behaviour for the better.

Warmly,

Damilola Ogunremi.
